Jazz King Dizzy Gillespie was born in Cheraw, SC on October 21, 1917. He was the founder of modern jazz and an innovative trumpeter. Gillespie received the Kennedy Center Honors of Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award. Crowds gather around every year to celebrate his birthday on the third weekend in October at the South Carolina Jazz Festival.
Darlington, SC
